The rear garden to the property is wide and comparatively shallow with a conifer hedge forming the boundary on one side. The heavy alkaline clay soil was improved prior to planting. Underneath the hedge the soil is very dry. The main long border faces north east but nonetheless some parts of it receive plenty of sunshine aided by their undulating shape and depth. In addition there are various feature beds around the garden.
The brief was to re-vamp the existing beds & borders with a colour theme of blue, soft yellows & white (and definitely not anything with even a hint of pink!). The owner favoured delphiniums, lavender, asters, lupins & hydrangeas. She was also keen on scent and plants which benefit butterflies & bees.
