Like the gardens of many barn conversions within villages, this garden has its challenges. It is very wide but quite shallow which has the effect of making the garden look smaller than it really is. The owners wanted a contemporary garden but one sympathetic to age of the building, which dates back to the late 18th century.
Landscaping materials were carefully chosen to meld well with the white lias stone of the house and the garden walls incorporating Brazilian black slate for the terraces. This and oak screening, is picked up in the copper slate cladding of a retaining wall.
Dividing up the space has resulted in the garden feeling much more spacious. There are several spaces to sit and a generous multi-purpose area ideal for entertaining. A courtyard area provides space for a shed & greenhouse, with beds for vegetables and cut flowers.
The planting needs some time to mature but not bad for the first season!
